01. Tank Leak Detection Systemt.
Undetected toilet leaks can result in massive water wastage, especially across large buildings or remote facilities. To tackle this, we developed a smart, compact Toilet Tank Leak Detection System capable of real-time monitoring, 4G cloud connectivity, and local data logging. Built around the ESP32 microcontroller and BG96 cellular modem, the system ensures constant oversight and early detection of leaks through sensor-based analysis and cloud integration.
02. The Challenges & Solutions
Controller: ESP32 for sensor data processing and system control
Connectivity: BG96 modem for 4G LTE transmission to the cloud
Sensors: Humidity and temperature sensors to detect leak conditions
Storage: SD card module for local logging in case of connectivity loss
Cloud: InfluxDB for time-series storage and Grafana for remote visualization
Enclosure: Compact, waterproof casing for mounting on/near toilet tank
Power Source: Rechargeable battery for autonomous operation
03. Working Process
Identifying the Need for Smarter Leak Monitoring
Traditional methods of leak detection rely on manual inspection or basic float-based alarms that don’t scale. Our goal was to enable remote, accurate, and continuous monitoring to detect even the smallest leaks before they cause significant water loss.
Sensor Integration & Data Processing
We equipped the system with temperature and humidity sensors, using defined thresholds and patterns to detect irregularities. The ESP32 processes this data locally and flags any anomaly that could indicate a leak inside the tank or surrounding structure.
Cloud Connectivity & Dashboard Visualization
Using the BG96 modem, data is transmitted to the cloud and stored in InfluxDB, where it’s visualized using Grafana dashboards. This provides users or maintenance teams with real-time insight—accessible remotely via mobile or desktop.
Redundancy via Local Logging
To ensure data isn’t lost due to connectivity issues, an SD card module was added for offline storage. This guarantees full traceability even when the device is operating in remote or signal-poor environments.

Designed to be modular and scalable, the system is ideal for use in smart buildings, hotels, public restrooms, and water-conscious facilities, enabling proactive maintenance and sustainability efforts.
