A Fully Offline Classroom Device — Quiz Distribution, Homework Transfer, and Real-Time Results on ESP32-S3 Without Internet or Cloud
This project delivered a self-contained embedded learning platform for classroom and home use, built entirely on an ESP32-S3 with no dependency on internet connectivity, cloud services, or external tablets. The system runs interactive UI screens loaded from a 64 MB external SPI flash chip, manages separate teacher and student device flows, distributes quizzes with images, collects and scores answers in real time, and transfers homework to student-side storage — all within the tight memory constraints of the ESP32-S3. The challenge was not just building the features: it was making a rich, multi-device educational workflow run reliably on hardware that costs a fraction of what traditional EdTech solutions demand, while remaining fully offline and privacy-compliant from day one.

ESP-IDF + FreeRTOS Firmware with External SPI Flash UI Loader, Dynamic Page Buffering, IP-Based Cluster Manager, and Offline Quiz/Homework Workflows
The system was built on ESP-IDF with FreeRTOS running on a custom ESP32-S3 Mini PCB. UI binary pages are compiled and programmed into a W25Q512 64 MB external SPI flash chip using a merge_bin flashing workflow. At runtime, the firmware reads flash headers and page offset maps to locate the requested screen, loads only that page into a dynamically allocated RAM buffer, renders it to the SPI display, and tears down the buffer before the next page is requested — keeping RAM usage predictable and within budget at all times. A separate IP-based cluster manager handles teacher-to-student device communication over local ESP-NOW, coordinating quiz pushes, answer collection, real-time scoring, and homework file transfer without any internet connection or external infrastructure. The full system was validated through cold boot testing, flash corruption simulation, power-cycle stress testing, and 72-hour long-duration stability runs.

What the Client Said
We needed something that would work in schools where internet is unreliable or simply not available. The idea of running quizzes, collecting answers, and sending homework all from a small embedded device seemed ambitious, but the team made it work cleanly. Teachers push a quiz and results come back in real time — students don't need to do anything special. The fact that it all runs on relatively inexpensive hardware and passed 72 hours of continuous testing gave us the confidence to move forward with a larger classroom rollout.
